There are two main elements to this album: my own flute playing, delayed, and the looped ambient sounds gathered from Hayao Miyazaki's 1997 film, Princess Mononoke.

From wolf growls and red elk hooves to bubbling brooks and the streets of irontown, the film is full of iconic sounds (never forgetting the tree spirits' clicks!) ~ MONONOKE highlights some of the more important sonic techniques that Studio Ghibli used to give life to the forest, and make its destruction through war all the more painful.

[There's one moment in particular that made me think to work with this film in the context of ambient sound - the scene where Ashitaka first arrives at the pool of the forest spirit, sees a massive footprint, and scans the surrounding area in near silence... until the viewer gasps with him at the sight of the god, hidden in a far away grove and shrouded in sunlight.]

All three of these tracks were improvised from start to finish, with periodic fades between ideas.

Flute by Nicolo Scolieri, with ambient sound ripped from a Studio Ghibli DVD. A Flashback X4 was used for delay and looping, and the octaving came from a Nano-POG. Recorded and mixed in Audacity.
